My second hand smoke saga has just began. My family and I are non smokers who live in a condo unit (1 of 4) where no other smokers had lived before. One of the units sold and is now rented out to smokers who live below us. The first day they arrived we noticed a change in the air quality and the smell. It is going on about 2 months of having them here. Their landlord says the tenant only smokes out on the enclosed patio. I tried talking to them both neighbor to neighbor. I even purchased the a fan that can be reversed to draw air out when she smokes. They returned it the next day. The building has some type of structural flaw in it. Whe she smokes down stairs it comes up into our unit. My daughter starts to cough, the wife gets a sore throat, and my eyes start to burn. My blood psi has jumped 30 points to where I might need medication now. Mainly because the tenants and their landlord don't seem to care what happens to people outside of their condo.
I am presently petitioning the condo board to have a special meeting to make our complex smoke free. But I am afraid that these smokers will have to be grandfathered in. I will be left with no choice but to try and sell our condo short or just to walk away from it and ruin our credit rating. All due to smokers who don't even own the unit below us.
In closing, if you live in a condo unit that does not have a smoke free policy, creat one and get it passed now! before it is too late and you end up like we are. |
