"Should someone have to risk their health to get a paycheck?" —Jeff Sims, Madison
Jeff has been a bar customer before and after Madison's smoke-free ordinance. And he's a former smoker. And he's also a bartender. So he's experienced secondhand smoke from several different perspectives.
What do some colleagues say about working in a smoke-free environment?
"Bartenders that I know who worked prior to smoke-free and who are still tending bar now comment all the time on how they feel healthier. They have less common colds. They're less prone to things that you would not think would be associated with secondhand smoke."
Would Jeff go back? "No ifs, ands or buts...I would not work in a bar that allowed smoking. It's just not worth it. It's just not worth the chronic long-term effects."
